The Principal's Office

The door to the principal’s office is open at all hours, although you will only find Hester at the receptionist’s desk from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. This is primarily where you can have private conversations with her. Though there’s an actual office in the back, it is always closed and locked.

Good news, H. [Farrah's sweeping into the office on Friday AM, looking extra pleased with herself.]

We're now both Assistant Directors.

[Hester looks up from her pink laptop with a small startle when Farrah makes her entrance, blinking several times in surprise while she tries to register the words coming out of her mouth.]

What? But the Wizard didn't mention anything about that to me- [One hand moves from her keyboard to the gold chain around her neck, nervously fiddling with the pendant there.]

I thought you were supposed to know everything since it's so hands-on. [She was going to clarify, but she can't help but tease Hester at least a little bit. There's something about that nervous, good girl energy that reminds her of her step-sister.

She flops into one of the plastic bad-kid seats, and makes herself comfortable. It's almost as if this is a familiar situation, for Farrah.]

What do you have on your necklace?

I am, just- [Farrah being so casual about all this does seem to make her relax a little. Is she just messing with her? She has to be. The Wizard wouldn't just drop someone new on her like this- would he?

Her hand falls away from the pendant and she extends it slightly to show the pendant: a small golden "H".]

It's an H, for my name. It was a present.

Cute. From The Wiz? [Farrah leans forward in her seat to take a good look. Ugh. A gold pendant with her initial on it? Total Annleigh type. Farrah tries to ignore the feelings that gives her.]

[She nods, practically beaming with pride.]

Mmhm! Nobody's ever given me jewlery before, not even any of my more well-off families, so it's kind if my favorite thing.

[brokeforgood]

[Farrah knows what it's like, when someone treats you good in a way that you're not used to. It's part of why she's here. So she nods, glancing away from Hester, so she's not analyzing her anymore.]

That's cool of him. For a juvie-owner, anyway. You don't have to worry-- he didn't make me an Assistant Director. Salieri did. For his play.

He's really wonderful when you get to know him. He's just so kind and he works so hard and- [It's nice, isn't it, Farrah? Getting positive attention when it's been denied to you for so long? But she stops herself when she realizes she's babbling.]

Oh-oh that makes much more sense. [She visibly relaxes, settling back into her chair.] That's great though! I'm so impressed by how quickly he's able to pull all of this together, I'm sure it's going to be amazing.

I have to take your word for it, for now. When do I get to meet him? [Weirdly, it's an earnest question. There's something about Hester's praise of the Wizard that makes her want to meet him too.]

Yeah. It's pretty cool. I might screw everything up, but he still wanted me to do it.

Hmm, I'm not sure. He prefers to be alone, I don't even see him most of the day. But maybe you'll get lucky soon! [:)

[Hester frowns a little, shaking her head.] You haven't even started yet and you're already putting yourself down?

Yeah. I screw a lot of things up. It’s kind of my thing.

And? [She tilts her head.] So does everybody. One time, right before picture day, I let my foster sister convince me to put red streaks in my hair. Let me tell you, huge mistake, massive screw up on my part.

[brokeforgood]

Is it bad I really want to see that? You have any pictures? [Even Farrah’s not rude enough to ask about the whole foster sister thing, but she does note it. Instead. She’ll just be rude about the streaks.]

Nooo, no, no. [She laughs, half-covering her mouth with her hand.] It was so long ago and I had to transfer schools a few months after. I haven't seen it in ages.
