The Principal's Office

The door to the principal’s office is open at all hours, although you will only find Hester at the receptionist’s desk from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. This is primarily where you can have private conversations with her. Though there’s an actual office in the back, it is always closed and locked.

WEEK 3, WEDNESDAY

[ For the second time this week, Peregrine barges into the principal's office. This time, she's alone, and she looks quite annoyed. ]

Alright, don't think I actually want to talk to you. But if you're not gonna let us outside, I need a few things, alright?

[Hester, to her credit, seems less surprised by Peregrine's sudden entrance this time. She just slides a steaming cup of tea across her desk toward her and folds her hands in front of her, her expression utterly patient.]

Sure, Peregrine. Just tell me what it is.

[Since Peregrine probably didn't have a lot of time before to really get a look at the place before there are two big things of note: a vase of fresh flowers sitting on the edge of her desk closest to the wall and an impressive poster on the back wall.]

[ Weirdly agreeable... Peregrine doesn't like it. She keeps her scowl, though she glances at both the vase and the poster (is that— from the Les Miserables—?) ]

If your vending machine's gonna keep spitting out deer skins, I need a place to dispose of the flesh. Usually I'd bury it, but we don't have access to the outside.

Ew. [Hester wrinkles her nose at the word "flesh".] I mean, I guess I can cart them outside and get rid of them, I know there's plenty of room to do it.

You know, if you actually let me outside, I could— [ This is futile. She cuts herself off with a harsh sigh. ] Whatever. They’re in the… [ … ] The freezer. It was the only place they wouldn’t rot.

[ There’s the unspoken sentiment, I’m not going back in there. ]

[She chews the inside of her cheek, mulling over if she should give her a little spoiler just to avoid having to paw through the freezer to bury some disgusting frozen meat...but no, she'll hopefully learn soon enough.

Peregrine will at least like the outdoors, she thinks. Maybe it'll make her a little less spicy.]

I'll take care of it. There's plenty of space on the grounds to bury them so the animals won't get at them.

[comeandfindme]

[ She raises an eyebrow. Wonders just what animals are out there. She hasn't seen birds through the window, hasn't heard anything, but there have to be animals if there's woods nearby, right? Maybe she can figure out where they are. ]

Good. [ And that...should be all. It should. But— ] ...Thanks for letting us use this place earlier. Connor needed it.

I couldn't just leave him in the hallway to dissociate out of his skin. I- [She folds her arms on top of her desk, her fingers flexing on her own forearm like a nervous habit.] I get the whole "no privacy" thing. I've lived some places where closed doors weren't allowed, ever, and it sucks. It was the least I could do in the moment.

[ Peregrine stares at her. She keeps trying, trying to figure Hester out. ]

You're saying that like you actually care about what happens to him. To the rest of us.

Of course I do. [She tilts her head, like that's the most obvious thing.] You're all amazing and, well, that's why I'm here.

[comeandfindme]

[ She lets out a harsh laugh. ]

You care about us, but you keep telling us to kill each other? Giving us...threats? Yeah. Sure, okay.

[ Peregrine is, thus far, not convinced. ]
