The Principal's Office

The door to the principal’s office is open at all hours, although you will only find Hester at the receptionist’s desk from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. This is primarily where you can have private conversations with her. Though there’s an actual office in the back, it is always closed and locked.

[When Maya comes in she... doesn't really have any gifts to bring. It's just her, looking mildly distracted. She spares Hester only a glance before sitting down.]

Do you have a moment?

Maya- [She's already pouring tea before Maya's butt even hits the seat.] Of course, of course. I always have time for you.

[Well, at least she can offer a faint smile at the effort.]

Thank you. [She pauses for a moment, before laughing without humor.] I'm developing a terrible habit of coming in and asking you if you were in the loop on something. Perhaps I should... be a little more straightforward this time?

How much do you know about Nana's background?

Well, hm. [She slides the cup over toward Maya, concern creeping into her eyes.] I know she was a friend of yours and in your class. I know she doesn't have parents, that she's extremely talented in more than just her singing and acting, that she's very sweet and caring person.

Of course. [Maya tries to smile but... It's frayed at the edges.]

What about her results in the revues?

[Yeah, that's really hard to miss, Maya.]

No...nothing really. I know there was a giraffe involved? And sword fighting.

[Another breath, one that quivers.]

I want to tell you something but... Not here. Sometime this week will you meet me in the locker room?

I- sure, Maya. I can do that. Are you- [She reaches out, not quite able to reach Maya in her chair.]

Are you okay?

[mayavericks]

[Maybe it isn't what Hester meant, but... Maya leans forward so that her head is tilted into that hand. Just the top of her head, but it's... nice.]

I don't know. It's been a long weekend. [She closes her eyes.] I'm just... scared to talk about this where He can hear. I trust you, but him?

[She shakes her head.]

[Hester very nearly pulls her hand away in surprise but relaxes after a second, letting her fingers slide through Maya's hair a touch.]

Oh, Maya... [Her voice is soft, her tone nothing but sympathetic.] I know things are hard and I'm...I'm so, so sorry. But yeah, we can do that this week.

[mayavericks]

[Considering their previous interaction, Maya is surprised that she gets even that. She closes her eyes at the brief level of comfort.]

[And then she proceeded to have a mental and emotional breakdown the rest of the week.]
